Job Description

Job Title: Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager

Working Pattern: Full Time

Working location: Thurso, Caithness

We have an exciting opportunity for a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) manager to join our Thurso team. This is a key role where you’ll report to the director and work closely with senior leaders to drive health, safety and environmental compliance, risk mitigation, and cultural improvement across the site. You’ll play a vital part in safeguarding people, operations, and the wider community through proactive engagement and expert HSE support.

The Vulcan site, at Thurso, is operated by Rolls-Royce on behalf of the Ministry of Defence (MoD). As an authorised nuclear site, knowledge of, and adherence to, the Vulcan Safety and Environment Management system is key to the role.

This role offers a strong mix of HSE leadership, strategic influence, regulatory knowledge, and close customer liaison, making it ideal for someone looking to deepen their impact within a high-performing safety culture.

Why Rolls-Royce?

Rolls-Royce is one of the most enduring and iconic brands in the world and has been at the forefront of innovation for over a century. We design, build and service systems that provide critical power to customers where safety and reliability are paramount.

We are proud to be a force for progress, powering, protecting and connecting people everywhere.

We want to ensure that the excellence and ingenuity that has shaped our history continues into our future and we need people like you to come and join us on this journey.

This role sits within our Defence business, supporting safety and environmental leadership at our Thurso site.

We’ll provide an environment of caring and belonging where you can be yourself. An inclusive, innovative culture that invests in you, gives you access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities where you can grow your career and make a difference.

You’ll be joining a collaborative, forward-thinking HSE team where your insight and expertise will be valued. You’ll have opportunities to shape local safety strategy, contribute to key projects, and progress your career with training and development support in one of the UK’s most respected engineering businesses.

What we offer

We offer excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home, or another remote location. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing

With this attractive opportunity you will get a chance to:

  • Support local management in identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing mitigation actions
  • Promote a proactive HSE culture and support behavioural and cultural improvement
  • Facilitate local HSE governance, conduct compliance gap analyses, and help deliver improvement plans
  • Prepare and support credible emergency response planning and execution

Who we’re looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we put safety first, do the right thing, keep it simple and make a difference. These principles form the behaviours that guide us and are an essential component of our assessment process. They are the fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

To be successful in this role you will need to:

  • Hold a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification
  • Have relevant HSE experience within a manufacturing, engineering, or high-risk industry
  • Be a confident communicator with the ability to engage and influence at all levels
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of HSE legislation, risk management and emergency planning
  • Be proactive, self-motivated and able to lead on safety initiatives independently

We are an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives which are crucial to innovation and problem solving. We believe the more diverse perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of caring and belonging, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.
